Programs for Special Needs Students
A. Programs for Mild/Moderately Learning Disabled Students
- Students reading significantly below grade level may be placed in our English 16/Social 16 classes. These classes allow students to receive assistance with reading, while obtaining high school credit in English and Social. Students then move on to English26/Social 26 in their Grade 11 year.After successfully completing these courses, students may then move on to Social 23 and English 20-2.
- Student who have been excluded from Grade 9 achievement tests may qualify for the English 16/Social 16 program route.
- Students with mild learning disabilities may be successful in the 13/14 course route. When possible, teacher assistants are placed in these classes to assist students with reading, remaining on task, and working on assignments or tests.
B. The Certificate of Achievement (Integrated Occupational Program)
- Students who may have difficulty finishing the required credits and courses for a high school diploma may be placed in the IOP program. These students work toward an 80 credt certificate, with emphasis on basic skills and preparation for the workforce.
C. Programs for Severely Disabled Students
- Students who qualify as severely disabled have programs designed specifically for their individual needs. These programs include integration into regular classes, as well as special education classes as required.The students program is created in cooperation with parents, and supervised by the Special Education Coordinator (Mrs. Lori Goble).
D. Assistance for All Students
- In addition to programs for special needs students, the special education department of CCHS also oversees the following:
- Tutoring Program - After school tutoring by University of Lethbridge Education students is available in mathematics, sciences and, on request, social studies and English. The tutoring is on a drop-in basis and at no charge to students. Any student may access this program.
- Diploma Examination Requests for Accommodations - Students who may require additional time, a private writing area, or other accommodations may apply for Accommodations.The request should be given to Mrs. Koran, who will make the necessary arrangements. In some cases, a doctors note may be required.
- Testing - Parents may request that a student be tested for reading and math difficulties. The Special Education Coordinator is able to carry out this testing at CCHS during regular hours. Parents who wish additional testing for behavioral or psychological concerns should see Mrs. Koran, who can make arrangements with our Division Psychologist.
