The School Act

Section 12 of the School Act (2002) States:

A student shall conduct himself or herself so as to reasonably comply with the following code of conduct:

a.      be diligent in pursuing the student's studies;

b.      attend school regularly and punctually;

c.       co-operate fully with everyone authorized by the board to provide education programs and other services;

d.      comply by the rules of the school;

e.       account to the student's teachers for the student's conduct;

f. respect the rights of others.

EXCUSED ABSENCES

It is the parent's responsibility to notify the school of the student's absence by note, by phone, or by email (Don Kuchison, Principal - kuchisond@holyspirit.ab.ca).  Elementary parents should let their child's homeroom teacher know of an absence (a note can be placed in the child's agenda).  Please inform the school prior to the date of the absence, on the date of the absence, or on the day the student returns to school.

The following absences are considered excused:

1. Personal Illness
2. Family Emergencies (funeral, death, hospitalization)
3. School approved activities (field trips, extracurricular activities)
4. Appearances in court when required by law.
5. Medical and dental appointments (As much as possible, please try to arrange these outside of school time)

Please call or email Mr. Don Kuchison at 403-627-3488 or kuchisond@holyspirit.ab.ca

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES

Absences not listed as excused are unexcused (this includes disciplinary action such as suspension) and will be processed by the school's administration as follows:

1. First unexcused absence and subsequent unexcused absences to four(including individual class truancy) - the parent is notified by telephone and/or mail of the student's attendance behavior (it is the responsibility of the student to confer with her/his teacher(s) to make up work that is missed.)

2. At five unexcused absences, a parent conference will occur with the associate principal, who acts as the attendance officer. The student will be suspended from school until a parent / guardian conference occurs.

3. When an elementary student has missed 30% of the school year, a recommendation to retain the student will be made to the student's parents/guardian.

4. When a junior high student has missed 30% of the school year, retention in the present grade will occur unless the student is able to pass the final exams in the four core subjects.

5. When a high school student reaches 10 absences and/or more, withdrawal from class will be considered, contingent upon the student's mark to date.

TARDY POLICY

A student is considered tardy when she/he is not in class when the class bell rings.  Teachers may allow exceptions for students with special needs.  If tardiness becomes a continuing problem, the student may be referred to the associate principal and her/his parents or guardian will be notified.  Continued tardiness will result in disciplinary action.

AM Tardies to School

Elementary students arriving late to school prior to 8:40 am will report directly to their classroom and still gain admittance through the elementary door.  Elementary students arriving later than 8:40 am must check into the Administration Office for a late slip prior to attending class.

Junior and senior high students arriving late to school will report directly to the Administration Office for a late slip.

Excused Tardy

To be considered "excused," students who are late to school must have a note from their parent/guardian with a valid reason for the tardiness (see excused absences).  Students arriving to school beyond 8:45 am are responsible for turning in the parent/guardian note to the Administration Office .  The Associate Principal will review notes to ensure that the tardy is legitimate.

Unexcused Tardy to Class

1. Any student who is tardy to class will receive a tardy from the teacher. The classroom teacher will keep a record of all student tardies throughout the semester. The teacher will record all tardies and absences in SIRS for every period of the day.

2. Any student caught skipping class (being truant) will be assigned to detention for the noon hour. If the student does not attend the noon hour detention, he/she will be placed on an in-school suspension.

3. Elementary students who are tardy will have the following consequences:

a. 3-4 tardies - detention from 11:50 am - 12:15 am
b. 5 tardies - detention from 11:35 am to 12:15 am
c. 6 tardies - One day on in-school suspension
d. After the 6th tardy consequences progress to 3 and 5 day suspensions with parent/ guardian meetings occurring at each step. Students cannot return to school unless accompanied by a parent/guardian.

4. Junior and Senior High School students who are tardy will have the following consequences:

a. 3-4 tardies - detention from 12:14 pm - 12:45 pm
b. 5 - tardies - detention from 12:14 pm - 1:05 pm
c. 6 - tardies - removal from sports team, extracurricular events or one day in-school suspension.

5. Any student with more than six tardies will be placed on an out of school suspension until a meeting occurs between the student, parents/guardians, and the associate principal.

End of Quarter Party

All students who reach the end of the quarter without receiving any tardies in all their classes will receive a reward to be determined by the Attendance Committee in November, January, April, and June.

Obtaining Make-Up Homework

It is the student's responsibility to arrange for make-up work after returning from an absence.  If your child is going to be absent for an extended period of time, please contact the Associate Principal as soon as possible to arrange make-up work.  If not completed on time, the student will receive no credit and may be subject to disciplinary action.
