Division Professional Development Day - October 20, 2016

Our Holy Spirit Division Professional Development Day on Thursday, October 20, 2016 focused on "Literacy and Numeracy." This day of learning and sharing built upon our understanding of Literacy and Numeracy. Based on the Ministerial Order on Student Learning, Alberta Education has defined Literacy and Numeracy as follows:

Literacy: Literacy is critical in helping us make meaning of the world around us. Literacy includes reading, writing, viewing, listening and speaking, but it also encompasses much more.

Numeracy: Numeracy is the ability, confidence and willingness to engage with quantitative and spatial information to make informed decisions in all aspects of daily living.

Our Keynote speakers were Dr. Richelle Marynowski and Dr. David Slomp from the University of Lethbridge speaking on the topic of Literacy and Numeracy. Their keynote address can be seen here.

Once again, our staff, students and community stepped up to provide 10- minute Spirit Talks. These can also be found on our Holy Spirit Youtube Channel.

Collaborative Peer Mentor Program 2017-2018
Our HS4 Collaborative Peer Mentor Program consists of a series of 6 half-day sessions paired with peer-to-peer classroom visits. We will use puzzles as vehicles for participants to develop and practice problem-solving skills. We will focus on how teachers can use the puzzles and techniques in their classrooms to enhance their teaching of mathematics. Participants are prepared to mentor and be mentored, to spend time away from their classrooms and to contribute enthusiastically to a new Professional Learning Community. We are fortunate to be partnering with the University of Lethbridge to provide participants with a choice in how they engage in the program. Participants will have the option of being a cohort member, who attends and participates in all sessions OR participants can apply for University credit!

Note: This course is eligible for the Alberta Education Mathematics Bursary.

Professional Development Council

Various groups of leaders work together in guiding professional learning. Through collaborative efforts with the Professional Development Council of our ATA local, we are able to maintain current and relevant support for continuous professional learning.

Southern Alberta Professional Development Consortium

SAPDC is one of seven Regional Consortia in Alberta established by Alberta Education to provide professional development, inservice and training opportunities to school trustees, superintendents, administrators, teachers, support staff and school councils.
The SAPDC website is a great portal to learning opportunities in our area. Sessions are offered in a variety of formats and at various times throughout the day. As well as access to face to face sessions, there are links to online professional learning opportunities such as webinars, Moodle courses, podcasts, videos and video conferencing.

Alberta Regional Professional Development Consortia
As Professional Development becomes more common in digital formats, we are beginning to gain access to more connections with the other learning consortia in the province. This site has links to each of the regional consortia within Alberta outlining all of the Professional Development sessions offered throughout the school year.

Alberta Teachers Association Professional Development Opportunities
The ATA PD page includes extensive information on Specialist Councils, Conferences Conventions and planning for Professional Learning.
