After a thorough review and considerable discussion of the proposed Alberta Draft K-6 Curriculum released on March 29, 2021, Holy Spirit Catholic School Division has determined that it will not be participating in the pilot and validation process.

“Following careful examination and study by administrators, teachers, and trustees,” says Superintendent Ken Sampson, “we recognize that the draft curriculum presented will not support the wellbeing and development of our students. Holy Spirit Catholic School Division remains committed to working closely with Alberta Education to the greatest extent possible to provide ongoing constructive feedback during the review process.”

Board Chair Bob Spitzig notes that the Board of Trustees is fully in support of this decision. “Our hope is that the Alberta Government and the Ministry of Education will listen carefully to the insights and feedback that continue to be provided by both staff and families across the province. We need to come together to redevelop this curriculum to ensure that it truly benefits all of our students.”

Staff and families are encouraged to share their feedback regarding the current draft K-6 Curriculum with their local MLA, the Minister of Education, the Premier of Alberta, and through the “Have Your Say” survey available on the Government of Alberta website at: https://www.alberta.ca/curriculum-have-your-say.aspx.
