Sophia Larney, a Grade 1/2 Teacher at St. Paul’s School in Lethbridge, has been selected as a recipient of the “Lois E. Mitchell Graduating Social Studies Teacher Award.” This provincial award, bestowed by the History and Heroes Foundation (https://www.historyandheroes.ca/the-foundation), recognizes graduating students entering the teaching profession with a speciality in Social Studies who are passionate about both Alberta’s and Canada’s history and seek to present it to students in inspiring and innovative ways.

“I love the process of taking complex concepts and breaking them down for younger learners,” explains Larney. “I focused my presentation to the award committee on gender equity in Canadian politics. It was fun to get into character and dress up as someone from 1924 to compare the number of women in provincial and federal leadership then and now in 2021. I used a scale as a prop for students to be able to visualize what gender inequality means in that context. By making connections between the past and present, my hope is that students can see the relevance that history has in their own lives. That way, they can begin to learn about their place in the world and how to advocate for themselves and their communities.”

Notes Gerry Muldoon, Principal of St. Paul School, “I was glad to hear that Sophia had received this prestigious award. She is a very dedicated young teacher. Since joining the St. Paul community, she has impressed the staff who work with her and has had a positive impact on the students in her care.”

“On behalf of the entire Holy Spirit Catholic School Division, I wish to extend a heart-felt congratulations to Ms. Larney on having received this very respected award,” states Superintendent Ken Sampson. “We are indeed grateful and extremely fortunate to have Ms. Larney on our staff and wish her the very best as she begins her teaching career with us.”

Larney travelled to Calgary yesterday, September 13, 2021, to be recognized by the History and Heroes Foundation where she was presented with a crystal owl statue representing optimism, truth, clarity of communication, energy and wisdom. “I am absolutely honoured to receive this award from the History and Heroes Alberta Foundation. As a Social Studies major, it's always been clear to me that history education is so much more than just memorizing dates and facts. I loved having the opportunity to create a fun, engaging, and educational presentation as a part of the award nomination and I'm excited to continue making history come alive for students - guiding them in growing as active, engaged, and curious citizens.”

Please join the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division community in extending sincere congratulations to Sophia Larney on receiving the "Lois E. Mitchell Graduating Social Studies Teacher Award."
