Media Statement: Response to Government Easing of Health Measures
Posted on 02/09/2022
Yesterday, February 8, 2022, Premier Kenney announced the Government’s plans to ease health restrictions in relation to COVID-19.
We know that our families have many questions about how this information will impact our schools over the coming weeks. We will continue to do our best to operationalize these changes safely, while still remaining cognizant of the varying physical, mental, and emotional needs of our students and staff.
Based on the information provided by the Government, effective on Monday, February 14, 2022, students will not be required to wear masks in schools, though mask use is still highly recommended. It should be noted that adults, such as staff, bus drivers, and visitors, are still required to wear masks in school settings. This practice is expected to remain in place until Tuesday, March 1, 2022, so long as hospitalizations in the province continue to trend down.
We will also be allowing spectators into our schools for school sports and extracurricular activities. However, it should be noted that masks will be required for all adults attending until further masking restrictions are officially removed.
As plans continue, please know that the division takes seriously its duty to provide safe and caring learning environments for all students. Students are expected to be respectful of each other and the choices that they make to protect their own physical and mental health. As such, harassment, bullying or discrimination of any type will NOT be tolerated.
Thank you, as always, for the amazing support that has been provided to our schools as we continue to transition through these uncertainties. We ask for your continued prayers - for the health and safety of our students, staff, and communities.
