One student, Sam McAdam, will be playing a vital role in this year’s ceremony after being named Valedictorian of his graduating class.

“It’s a really big honour to be named Valedictorian,” said the Grade 12 Honour Roll student. “I’ve always been really passionate about learning and school and I’ve always believed that we should just work hard at everything and try our best.”

Sam graduated at the top of his class with a class average that was 3.5% higher than the next student. He was also the recipient of the Schulich Leader Scholarship for Catholic Central High School earlier this year that represents the top entrepreneurial-minded STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) student. Sam is also involved in extracurriculars, including the CCH Robotics Club, and spends his free time playing piano and competitive rock climbing. However, he holds his studies in high regard and is looking forward to a bright future.

“I’ve always loved science and math, so after graduation I plan on studying engineering,” he said. “Specifically, I want to go to the University of British Columbia to study environmental engineering. I feel that, through environmental engineering, I’ll be making a difference wherever I go. I’ll be getting a lot of opportunities helping other people and helping the environment which I feel will be a very fulfilling career path.”

When it comes to being  Valedictorian, Sam is looking forward to giving his speech at this year’s ceremony but says it does come with some nerves.

“As far as the speech goes, it’s all written. It’s a pretty big responsibility so I’m a little nervous but I think I’ll be able to do it and hopefully represent my graduating class in the best light possible!”

CCH’s Principal, Mrs. Joanne Polec, is looking forward to an exciting Graduation weekend and believes Sam was the best person for the job as Valedictorian.

“Sam, since Grade 10, has been highly academic. He’s quite humble about his prowess as a student and was the recipient of the Grade 10 and 11 highest achievement award. It wasn’t really a question as to whether he would be Valedictorian or not, it was a matter of how high that mark was going to be.”

In addition to his academics, Mrs. Polec went on to say that Sam is a leader within the CCH school community and is always someone who is willing to help his fellow peers in understanding course content while staying humble and kind.

When it comes to this weekend’s Graduation ceremony, with all events being held at the ENMAX Centre, 300 Catholic Central High School students will be walking the stage on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 9:00am. The weekend’s events begin tonight, Friday May 10, 2024, with Graduation Mass at 7:00pm and end tomorrow evening with the Grand March at 7:00pm.

The Holy Spirit Catholic School Division would like to congratulate all of our Catholic Central High School graduates on making it to this incredible milestone and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors.
