Excellence in Catholic Education Award 2017/2018 - Mar 11,2018

Superintendent Chris Smeaton is pleased to announce that Sandra Cormican, Kindergarten teacher at Children of St. Martha School in Lethbridge, has been selected as Holy Spirit Catholic School Division's recipient for the Council of Catholic School Superintendents of Alberta's (CCSSA), "Excellence in Catholic Education Award" for 2017/2018.  The award recognizes Catholic educators in Alberta who "are passionate about Catholic education and the students they teach, inspire their students, and demonstrate commitment to Catholic education and teaching excellence."

Notes Superintendent Smeaton, "When Sandra's name was forwarded to me as potential candidate for this award, my immediate response was, ‘Perfect!' Sandra is a quiet leader in our school communities.  Her faith and her commitment to teaching excellence absolutely radiate from her, and I truly believe that she exemplifies the teaching vocation to help those around her realize their own God-given potential."

Children of St. Martha School Principal, Shannon Collier, could not agree more, "Sandra is a humble, patient, and genuinely kind person who nurtures the growth of the students entrusted in her care through innovative and passionate learning experiences.  As a Catholic educator she lives a sacramental life that reflects our Catholic values. Sandra can always be seen with a smile on her face as she "walks with love" on a daily basis."

Despite feeling "humbled that [her] actions, in a division filled with so many amazing, faith-filled people, have been deemed noteworthy," Mrs. Cormican recalls that, from a young age, she has always wanted to be a teacher.  "Seeing my classmates' faces light up because I helped them understand something that they had been struggling with was very rewarding. I decided that helping others learn and reach their full potential was to be my purpose in life." After 15 years in education, the last 5 of which have been with Holy Spirit School Division, Sandra explains that, not only does she feel "privileged to work in a school division that views education as nurturing children emotionally, academically, physically, and spiritually," but she has been blessed with a number of amazing colleagues who have mentored, challenged, and supported her through the years. "I would not be the teacher I am today were it not for the influence of these incredible people."

Mrs. Cormican will be honoured at the ACSTA's SPICE Conference, which will be held from April 26-29, 2018. Please join the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division in congratulating Sandra Cormican for being selected as our recipient of the "Excellence in Catholic Education Award."
