Press Release: 2 Full-day, Everyday Kindergarten Programs to Open in September 2018 - posted until - May 10,2018

Holy Spirit Catholic School Division is pleased to announce that two (2) full-day, everyday Kindergarten Programs will be opening for this coming 2018/2019 school year.  Children of St. Martha Elementary School, in west Lethbridge, and St. Paul Elementary School, in north Lethbridge, are now accepting registrations for these full-day, everyday programs.

Superintendent Chris Smeaton provides the rationale for the decision.  "Holy Spirit is committed to trying new and innovative educational practices that better suit the needs of today's students and their families.  Current research indicates that children will benefit from consistent, rich, play-based environments, which is why we've chosen to start this program at these two schools."

"The benefits of a full-day, everyday programs are clear," adds Director of Support Services, Michelle MacKinnon.  "Educators will simply have more time to honour the natural developmental sequence of each individual child.  Rather than trying to address the whole curriculum in a limited timeframe, children will be given a full day to truly explore.  More play-based opportunities can only inspire children's natural curiosity, positively impacting their progress academically, physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually."

Children of St. Martha School Principal, Shannon Collier, notes that she is excited about the positive impact this program will have on the school's families.  "Parents play such an essential role in their child's development. Part of our plan in expanding to a full-day Kindergarten program is that we will also host cafes and information sessions, both during the day and after school hours, that will aid and encourage parents to be active participants in their child's learning.  I think this will give families more opportunities to connect with both the school and with each other; building an even stronger, more welcoming community whose primary goal is to take care of all of our children throughout all aspects of their development and well-being."

Gerry Muldoon, principal of St. Paul School could not agree more.  He adds that full-day Kindergarten will not only give families a wonderful opportunity to connect with the school but, "Most importantly they [the children] will be able to make sense of their world and learn, literacy, numeracy and social skills in a rich play-based environment, helping them to be better prepared for Grade 1."
