The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the most significant and ancient traditions of the Catholic Church, celebrating the moment when Mary, having finished the course of her earthly life, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory. This teaches us that our bodies are sacred and that the physical world we live in is deeply connected to the spiritual world to come.
The Assumption matters to us today because it provides a powerful sense of hope. In a world that can often feel heavy with suffering or loss, Mary’s Assumption serves as a "sign of sure hope and solace." She represents the first of humanity to experience the fullness of the Resurrection, showing us where we are meant to go. Her life was one of constant "yes" to God—from the moment the Angel Gabriel appeared to her, to the foot of the Cross, and finally to her entrance into heaven. Her example encourages us to live our daily lives with the same trust, knowing that our ultimate home is with God.
We celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption on August 15. It is a day of joy and triumph, often marked by the blessing of fruits and herbs in many cultures to symbolize the "first fruits" of the harvest and Mary as the first fruit of the Resurrection. St. Mary, in her Assumption, is the patron saint of many countries and is honored as the Queen of Heaven. Her legacy challenges us to look upward and remember that our earthly journey has a glorious destination.
As we celebrate this feast, we might ask ourselves: How can I live my life today so that I am always moving toward the heavenly home God has prepared for me? By following Mary's path of humble service, we find the strength to face our own earthly challenges with grace.

Almighty and ever-living God, who assumed the Immaculate Virgin Mary, the Mother of Your Son, body and soul into heavenly glory, grant, we pray, that, always attentive to the things that are above, we may merit to be sharers of her glory.
