Embracing this year’s inspiring theme, “The Future is Bright,” the graduates officially stepped into their next chapter surrounded by the family, friends, and staff who supported them along the way. The theme was driven by Scripture, specifically Matthew 5:14-16:

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

The celebrations commenced on the evening of Friday, June 5, with a beautiful Cap & Gown Mass at St. Michael’s Church. The graduating class was joined by family members, school trustees, division leadership, teaching staff, and Holy Spirit Catholic School Division Superintendent Chantel Axani.

The moving liturgy was led by Fr. Marino Infante, parish priest at St. Michael's Church, alongside Deacon Tom O'Toole and Father Roy Jayamaha of St. Paul Church in Brocket. Together, they delivered a deeply resonant experience for all in attendance.

Events resumed Saturday afternoon, June 6, at the Pincher Creek Community Hall. The day began with inspiring remarks and a recognition ceremony at 2:00 p.m., leading into an evening banquet at 5:30 p.m.

During the ceremony, Trustee Blake Dolan took the stage to address the graduates. Keeping the tone light and engaging, he shared personal anecdotes and uplifting humor that brought smiles to the crowd. However, his core message carried profound wisdom for the road ahead:

“The future is bright, but sometimes the darkness will come into your life as well. With prayers and support, you will always come back to the brightness.”

Principal Karen Schmidt added to the sentiment with an inspiring send-off:

“As you step out of these school doors for the last time, on the last day, remember the foundation you built here. Remember the staff that just love you, just the way you are. Take those smarts, that artistic vision, that athletic grit, and that beautiful, unifying faith, and go make your mark on the world. Don't be afraid to take a few risks, stir up a little trouble when it matters, and always remember your roots. Class of 2026, I love you! SMPC Feather Blessing

Honouring Tradition for our Graduates: St. Michael’s Pincher Creek Hosts Inspiring Feather Blessing Ceremony.

Led by Elder Eric Crow Shoe and his wife, Doreen Weasel Bear, the event featured traditional drummers and guest speakers who joined together to honour the graduates' milestones. During the ceremony, eight First Nations students were honoured as feather recipients, while two students received Métis sashes.

Principal Karen Schmidt reflected on the history of this beautiful tradition at St. Michael’s. The journey began in 2017 when three local schools held a combined, private Feather Blessing in Brocket. Seeking to expand cultural understanding, the late Elder Peter Strikes With A Gun, championed teaching others about the tradition. In 2018, rights were formally requested and granted to bring the ceremony directly to SMPC, where it found a home in the school’s prominent gathering space, known as “The Den.”

The Significance of the Feather and Sash

The ceremony serves as a powerful testament to the distinct cultural identities of the graduating students. Its feathers act as sacred links between the physical and spiritual worlds, serving as:

A Symbol of Virtue: Representing trust, honor, and freedom.

Living Medicine: Providing spiritual power and healing for the mind, body, and spirit.

A Connection to the Creator: Carrying prayers directly to the spirit world.

Once a feather is received, it carries a sacred, lifelong responsibility. Cultural protocol dictates it must be treated with the utmost respect, never allowed to touch the ground, and stored safely in a clean place, such as a traditional cedar box.

Alongside the feathers, the presentation of the Métis sash carries profound historical meaning. Symbolizing resilience, history, and distinct community roots, the sash celebrates the enduring strength and identity of the Métis Nation.

This year’s celebration marked a significant milestone for the school, representing the largest Feather Blessing ceremony in its history. Moved from "The Den" to the school gymnasium to accommodate the overwhelming community support, the venue was completely filled with family, friends, and peers. Principal Schmidt noted the profound impact of holding the ceremony publicly, sharing how inspiring it is that even the youngest three- and four-year-old students in the audience can now look at the ceremonial Buffalo Rug and look forward to sitting upon it themselves one day.

Looking ahead, St. Michael’s plans to expand the celebration next year by integrating traditional face-painting into the ceremony. St. Paul School Celebrates Rich Diversity at Third Annual Multicultural Night

St. Paul School (SPS) recently hosted its third annual Multicultural Night, a vibrant and well-attended celebration that highlighted the rich cultural tapestry of the school community. This year's milestone event grew significantly, featuring 11 different cultures and drawing over 200 attendees who gathered to learn, connect, and celebrate together.

The evening provided an interactive platform for students and their families to proudly showcase their heritage through beautifully curated displays, traditional clothing, and authentic cuisine. For many, the highlight of the night was watching the school’s youth take center stage as cultural ambassadors.

"The most impactful part is seeing how much our students shine when given a platform to share their culture," says Mrs. Jocelyn Martinez, Grade 6 teacher at St. Paul School.

The success of the Multicultural Night relies heavily on the dedication of SPS families, who volunteered countless hours to prepare food and build educational exhibits. From sharing beloved family recipes to answering questions about their native countries, parents and students worked hand-in-hand to create an immersive experience for all in attendance.

The event also highlighted the open-mindedness and curiosity of the broader school community. It was a weekend defined by more than just diplomas; it was a beautiful tapestry of faith, deep reflection, and genuine, heartfelt joy.

Inspired by the theme “Climb a Mountain and Turn Around,” graduates, families, and staff gathered to honor the resilience and spirit of a class that has truly left its mark on our community.

The celebrations began on a high note Friday evening with a moving graduation Mass presided over by Father Kevin Tumback. That sense of gratitude carried over into Saturday morning, where the atmosphere was electric. There is nothing quite like the collective cheer of a community watching its youth proudly cross the stage to begin their next chapter.

Throughout the ceremonies, the messages shared were filled with warmth and wisdom. Trustees, teachers, and Superintendent Chantel Axani each spoke to the strength found in faith and the importance of carrying a supportive community in one’s heart long after leaving the halls of CCHS.

Valedictorian Alex Galtonov delivered a standout address, using the lyrics of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” to reflect on the growth that happens during life’s most uncertain moments. He reminded his peers that the "climb" is just as important as the view from the top.

“Keep climbing, keep dreaming, even keep failing,” he shared. “Most of all, enjoy the journey. You deserve it.”

Challenging the graduates to look outward, Trustee Carmen Mombourquette asked them how they might use their unique talents and the love of Christ to build a world they are proud to pass down to future generations.

Superintendent Chantel Axani also shared a powerful perspective on what truly makes a life successful.

Grounding her message in the words of St. Paul, she reminded the graduates that even the greatest achievements are hollow without compassion.

“The goal is to be the love that makes the climb worth it, for everyone,” Axani shared. “If you carry the love of Christ, you will be everything.”

As the Class of 2026 looks toward new horizons, this weekend served as a brilliant reminder of their potential. She will be stepping into the role as Mr. Mark Wynder has chosen to transition back into the classroom full-time.

Mrs. Zoratti’s connection to St. Michael’s runs deep. She graduated from the school 36 years ago before attending the University of Alberta for two years and transferring to the University of Calgary, where she earned a Bachelor of Kinesiology. In 2008, she returned to university to earn her Bachelor of Education with a science major from the University of Lethbridge.

Both Mrs. Zoratti and her husband are proud St. Michael’s alumni whose children were all "Dragons." Born and raised in Pincher Creek, the couple now ranch west of town and are incredibly proud to call the community their home.

Since beginning her teaching career at St. Michael’s in 2011, Mrs. Zoratti has taught every grade from Kindergarten through Grade 8, with the exception of Grade 1. Throughout her career, she has taken a leadership role in implementing the school's SPACES reporting platform and Collaborative Response model. She consistently seeks out opportunities to grow her professional practice to better help students deepen their understanding.

In welcoming Mrs. Zoratti to this position, Superintendent Chantel Axani shares:

"We are thrilled to appoint Patty as Associate Principal of St. Michael’s School. As a teacher leader whose profound Catholic faith and vibrant spirit have long enriched the fabric of the school community, she makes this transition into a formal leadership role as a natural extension of her years of dedicated service."

Mrs. Zoratti draws daily inspiration from scripture:

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." — Philippians 2: 3-4

Reflecting on this verse, she shares:

“Philippians 2:3-4 serves as the cornerstone of my philosophy as an educator and leader. Throughout my life, whether through coaching, volunteering, or taking on leadership roles, I have believed that true progress is a collective effort. To me, this scripture is a call to servant leadership—a reminder that my role as Associate Principal is not to seek personal recognition, but to elevate our entire community. I am committed to leading by example and, in the spirit of humility, drawing upon the diverse expertise and wisdom of our staff and families. By looking to the interests of others first, we ensure that every decision we make is centered on the growth and well-being of their students.”

Principal Karen Schmidt also shares her enthusiasm for Mrs. Zoratti’s appointment:
"With over a decade of dedicated service to St. Michael’s School, Patty is a proven educator whose passion for children is rooted in her deep commitment to our Catholic faith. Having witnessed her teaching excel across various grade levels and build meaningful connections through our athletics program and community events and activities, I have full confidence in her transition to Associate Principal. Patty is a vibrant member of our school community who leads with a servant’s heart. Her contagious, joyful energy is a gift that elevates everyone around her, and I am certain her leadership will empower our students to live out our motto: 'Rise Above! Inspire Greatness!'"

Mrs. Zoratti feels deeply humbled and excited to step into the role of Associate Principal at St. Michael’s. She views the school as her home and feels a profound calling to serve this community in this new capacity. She is eager to support both staff and students in discovering and utilizing their unique, God-given gifts to reach their fullest potential.

Holy Spirit Catholic School Division is pleased to formally congratulate Mrs. Zoratti on her new appointment. The division remains deeply grateful for her continued service and is confident that she will continue to foster the same high level of dedication and leadership that have long characterized her contributions to the school community.

Celebrating the Success of OLA's Annual PYPx Exhibition

The Holy Spirit Catholic School Division is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of the Grade 6 class at Our Lady of the Assumption (OLA) IB World School. On April 30, 2026, the school community gathered to celebrate the culminating event of the Primary Years Programme: the annual PYP Exhibition (PYPx).

This year’s exhibition was a remarkable demonstration of the deep learning, critical thinking, and commitment to making a difference that OLA students have developed throughout their International Baccalaureate education.

Inquiry Rooted in Faith and Global Goals

The PYP Exhibition is a student-led inquiry where learners choose real-world issues that matter to them. St. Kateri

Saints Who Inspire Us: The Life and Legacy of St. Kateri Tekakwitha

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, known affectionately as the "Lily of the Mohawks," remains one of the most resilient and radiant figures in the history of faith. Born in 1656 in what is now Auriesville, New York, to a Mohawk father and an Algonquin Christian mother, Kateri’s life was defined by a quiet strength that blossomed despite immense hardship. Her journey began in the shadow of tragedy when, at just four years old, a smallpox outbreak claimed the lives of her parents and brother. Kateri survived the disease, but it left her with permanent facial scarring and damaged eyesight—challenges that would lead her to be named "Tekakwitha," meaning "she who bumps into things."

Raised by her uncle, Kateri was a young woman of profound independence. Despite the social expectations of her village and pressure to marry, she found herself drawn to the teachings of Jesuit missionaries. At the age of twenty, she made the courageous choice to be baptized, a decision that was met with significant opposition from many in her community. Facing ridicule and isolation for her new faith, Kateri eventually sought refuge in a Christian community near Montreal. There, she lived a life of deep prayer, service, and a profound respect for nature, often creating small wooden crosses in the woods to transform the forest into a place of worship.

Today, St. Kateri is honored as the patron saint of Indigenous peoples, the environment, and ecology, with her feast day celebrated on July 14 in the United States and April 17 in Canada. Her life matters because she reminds us to stay strong in our faith, even when it is difficult. She showed great courage, devotion, and a deep-seated respect for creation, encouraging us to care for the earth and trust God in every part of our lives. Her spirit is perhaps best captured in her own searching question: “Who can teach me what is most pleasing to God that I may do it?”

As we reflect on her legacy, we might ask ourselves: How can we show courage in our faith and care for the world God created? Following her example allows us to find beauty in our own scars and a sanctuary in the world around us.

A Prayer to St. Kateri

Lord, help us follow the example of St. Kateri by loving You with our whole hearts and caring for Your creation. Give us courage to live our faith and kindness toward all people.

Amen.

St. Kateri, pray for us!
