Opening Mass 2025 Hero Image

Holy Spirit Catholic School Division Opens the 2025/2026 School Year with Faith and Purpose

Today, the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division gathered at Catholic Central High School East in Lethbridge to celebrate the annual Division Opening Mass. The celebration marked the beginning of a new school year rooted in confidence, faith, and a shared mission to educate. His Excellency, Bishop McGrattan, presided over the Mass, offering words of inspiration and challenge for all gathered.

Drawing on the example of St. John the Baptist, Bishop McGrattan reminded staff and clergy of their sacred role as Catholic educators and leaders. Like John, who always pointed beyond himself toward Christ, we too are called to guide students to the Lamb of God with courage, humility, and steadfastness.

“We have the privilege of pointing out the Lamb of God. We have the privilege of introducing students to Jesus Christ,” Bishop McGrattan said. He invited staff to see themselves in the role of evangelization, courageously presenting the gospel in a world that often presents what is not true. His words called for a deep sense of humility and conviction: to serve first, to witness to the truth, and to stand firm in faith, even when facing challenges.

Following the Mass, Superintendent Chantel Axani addressed staff with gratitude and encouragement for the year ahead. She acknowledged the exciting growth of the Division, highlighted by the construction of St. Kateri elementary school, as well as the daily dedication of all staff across 16 schools. With honesty, she recognized the uncertainty and challenges of the times, while calling everyone back to the heart of their mission: the students.

“Our students are the heart of everything that we do, and they are counting on us,” Chantel reminded staff. She called the Division to embrace the new three-year faith plan, Open Wide the Doors! Sent to Share Christ’s Love, with renewed fire and unwavering faith.

Her message was clear: in every role, from classroom to bus route, office to playground, each act of service is a living expression of Christ’s love. As a Division, we are called to be welcoming, to be a light, and to actively open our doors to share Christ’s love through both words and actions.

Together, the Opening Mass and Superintendent’s address set a confident and hope-filled tone for the 2025-26 school year. One grounded in truth, inspired by humility and courage, and united by the mission to bring Christ’s love into every classroom and community.

A Celebration of Cultures: OLA Hosts First Annual Parade of Nations

Parents were invited to attend, filling the space with excitement and support for this special showcase of global identity and unity.

“We have so many different places from around the world represented here in our students,” said Principal Meghan Calder. “The Parade of Nations was a great way to celebrate the diversity that is truly a gift to OLA—a fun and meaningful way for everyone to wear their outfits, make a flag, and celebrate together at the end of the school year.”

As part of the school’s commitment to inclusion and global awareness, the event highlighted nearly 30 nations represented by OLA students—many of whom are newcomers or refugees with rich and varied life experiences.

“We want all of our students to come here and feel seen and welcomed, regardless of where they come from,” Calder added. “Some of our refugee students have come through many different places, and to have everyone feel like this is home is one of our main goals.”

The planning for the Parade of Nations began earlier in June when students were invited to spend an hour designing their flags and preparing for the celebration. That single hour quickly turned into something more.

“It turned out not to be enough time,” Calder shared. “The students were taking this idea and running with it. They wanted to do more. We set aside another hour and it just kept growing into what we saw today.”

As an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) school, OLA places a strong emphasis on global mindedness, student voice, and intercultural understanding—values that were clearly on display during the parade.

“We want our students to be globally aware,” said Calder. “What can we learn from one another? From our cultures, our languages, our stories? By learning about each other, we grow—and today, that growth was visible in every flag, every smile, and every step in the parade.”

The Parade of Nations was not only a celebration of diversity, but also a shining example of what happens when students are given the freedom and encouragement to lead. As Calder put it, “It’s always about seeing what the students will do—having them find agency within themselves and lead the group. That’s exactly what they did today.”

With the success of its first year, the Parade of Nations is poised to become a beloved annual tradition at OLA—one that reflects the school’s heart, values, and commitment to welcoming every child, from every corner of the world.

The small but tightly bonded group of five graduates was honoured in a series of special events that reflected the deep connections among students, staff, and families—and the legacy of a school that has served the community for decades.

The official Graduation Ceremony took place on Saturday, June 21 at St. Michael’s School. In attendance were friends, family members, staff, and community dignitaries, including Mayor Gordon Reynolds, Superintendent Chantel Axani, and Principal Kevin Kinahan. Guest speaker Mr. Dave Allen offered reflections, followed by a moving slideshow chronicling the lives and memories of each graduate.

The ceremony’s highlight was the heartfelt Valedictorian Address shared by co-valedictorians Sam Biegel and Dyllan Thurston, who have been best friends since childhood.

“The five of us have been friends since we were little kids,” said Sam. “It’s bittersweet to say goodbye. The ceremony ended in celebratory fashion with the tossing of graduation caps—a symbol of both accomplishment and new beginnings.

That evening, the celebration continued with a Graduation Banquet at Burdett Hall, beginning with dinner, a Grand March, and a dance. The week before, on Sunday, June 15, the class was also honoured during Mass at St. Michael Parish, where Father Wojciech Jarecki offered a blessing in front of their families and parish community.

“Four of the five graduates have been together since kindergarten,” said Principal Kevin Kinahan. “There’s a kind of connection you make spending over half your life together in one place. It’s a really emotional but joyful day—for them, for their families, and for our staff.”

“This graduation is especially meaningful,” added Associate Principal Jill Weatherhead, “because it’s the last one. The students were so committed to finishing together at St. Michael’s, and this weekend, they made that dream a reality.”

Starting in the 2025–2026 school year, St. Michael’s School will transition to a Kindergarten to Grade 9 model, making this year's graduates the final high school class to walk across the stage.

Both Sam and Dyllan are now preparing for post-secondary studies. Sam is heading to the University of Lethbridge to pursue a Bachelor of Science, with hopes of attending the University of Calgary for Veterinary Medicine. Their drawings celebrated everything from family and friendship to nature, local landmarks, and favourite places—all under the theme of visual storytelling.

“It was such an amazing opportunity to have students from both elementary and junior high be part of this,” she said. “It was so neat to watch the process unfold—from the time they created their small drawings to seeing them on such a large scale in the tunnel. It was a unique chance for our youth to have an artistic voice and be part of beautifying something in our community.”

Working with the artists, students’ sketches were carefully woven into a larger composition that became “Tunnel Vision,” the largest mural project ever completed in Lethbridge, spanning 2,500 square feet.

FLVT students were then invited to the mural site to help bring their drawings to life—painting side-by-side with professional artists and learning large-scale painting techniques in the process.

“It was really fun. We got to make a lot of drawings and use different materials we wouldn't have had the chance to use otherwise,” said Grade 9 student Lolu Awoderu. “To be a part of this felt good because we helped paint it, we helped make it, and we were there for the concept. It was like experiencing history.”

Muralist Lacey Jane explained that preserving the creativity and originality of each student’s vision was at the heart of the project.

“When you give a child a crayon and a piece of paper, what they come up with is truly genius, wildly unique, and wonderful in every way. It was important for us to keep the actual drawings they had done but blow them up on such a huge scale. The sky’s the limit—and as you walk through this tunnel, you can see anything and everything their little minds could come up with.”

The “Tunnel Vision” mural is now a permanent part of Lethbridge’s growing public art collection and a lasting reminder of the imagination and talent of local youth. For FLVT students and staff, it’s also a powerful example of how education, art, and community can come together to create something truly special.

Future Change-Makers: OLA Hosts Inaugural IB PYP Exhibition

On Thursday, June 5, 2025, Our Lady of the Assumption School (OLA) in Lethbridge proudly hosted its inaugural International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) Exhibition, a culminating event that showcased the learning, research, and global thinking of the school’s Grade 6 students.

Held just days after the school officially received its IB PYP certification in late May, the event marked a historic milestone—making OLA the first elementary school south of Calgary to earn the internationally recognized IB PYP designation.

The exhibition, often referred to as “PYPx,” is the final project in the IB Primary Years Programme. It allows students to apply their learning by exploring real-world issues, conducting research, and taking meaningful action in response.

“Today we’re holding the Primary Years Program Exhibition, PYPx—the culmination of the IB PYP program, conducted in the last year of elementary school,” said Mrs. Caryn Swark, Associate Principal and PYP Coordinator at OLA. “It’s like a science fair, but instead of science projects, the students have selected a way that they would like to change the world.”

Guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), students identified global issues that resonated with them, such as hunger, climate change, and equality. Projects ranged from a school-wide food drive that collected over 600 items for the local food bank to awareness campaigns on coral bleaching and plastic pollution.

“The students have been working really hard on this for the last three or four months,” said Grade 6 teacher Mr. Jorin Gaudet. “It started off with exploring global issues and from that, students were inspired to choose an issue they could focus on—research, learn about, and then do something about. That’s all culminating here today at our PYPx.”

Mrs. Swark explained that while the school continues to follow the Alberta curriculum, the IB approach focuses on inquiry-based learning across six global themes, integrating subjects like science, social studies, religion, and English language arts. “What we’re teaching is still the Alberta curriculum, but it’s as important how we’re learning it and the skills we’re building and who we’re becoming as we learn,” she said.

Among the 17 projects on display, Grade 6 student Devlyn Jackson shared her team’s focus: “For our project, we did climate change affecting marine life. We mainly focused on coral bleaching and how climate change causes it and how climate change is created,” she said. “I really like marine life and think that climate change is a really big issue, so we wanted to combine the two together.”

Mrs. Swark emphasized that the IB philosophy is about nurturing global citizens—young people who are critical thinkers, communicators, and caring members of the global community. “Even though they’re young, they have the power, they are the future, and they are able to go out and make a change in the world.”

As students presented their work to parents, peers, and community guests, their passion and sense of purpose were unmistakable.

“The students' passion for this has been incredible, and they’ve been really easy to guide because they’ve chosen something they’re interested in,” said Mr. Gaudet. “It’s been fantastic to see the growth.”

And for students like Devlyn, the experience has been as fun as it’s been impactful: “I think IB is really cool because usually we don’t do fun stuff like this. I would like to do it again—it’s really fun and interesting!”

The exhibition not only celebrated student achievement but also marked a new chapter in OLA’s identity as a fully certified IB PYP school—one committed to forming curious, capable, and compassionate global learners.

The ceremony, held in the heart of the community, was a true testament to the growth, resilience, and spirit of this close-knit group — many of whom have been together since Pre-Kindergarten.

The celebration included a heartfelt ceremony with speeches from Principal Ms. Karen Schmidt, Holy Spirit Catholic School Division Superintendent Ms. Chantel Axani, and Piikani Nation Chief Mr. Troy Knowlton. Principal Schmidt shared her personal connection to this year’s graduating class.

“Our Grade 12 students and parents have put together a huge effort to get to today,” said Ms. Schmidt. “We have 25 students graduating and it’s extra special for me because one of them is my youngest son. Their motto really does fit this class because they’ve been through everything from COVID to multiple challenges, both inside and outside of the school. Each has their own story and brings a unique gift to this stage today.”

This year’s class motto, “Today’s Accomplishments Were Yesterday’s Impossibilities,” captured the journey of a class that has weathered unprecedented times together, emerging stronger and united.

Valedictorian Luca Citrigno, following in the footsteps of his two older sisters, gave a powerful address to his classmates, highlighting their years of shared experiences and dreams for the future.

“Being named valedictorian was really special for me because my second and third oldest sisters were both valedictorians, so it sort of became a tradition that I was excited to carry on,” said Citrigno. “It means a lot to graduate with this class because many of us have been together since preschool. My best friend and I have been in the same class together since we were four years old. It feels like we’ve all grown together, and I wouldn’t trade going to a small school for anything.”

Citrigno, who will be heading to Northwest Polytechnic in Grande Prairie to play basketball on scholarship and study business, expressed gratitude for the close bonds formed over the years.

“As a class, we’ve supported each other and been there for each other. The day concluded with a formal dinner for all graduates and their loved ones, providing one final moment of connection and celebration before the students begin their next chapter.

The 2025 graduation of St. Michael’s School, Pincher Creek, was not just a milestone for the students but a celebration of community, perseverance, and the unbreakable bonds formed in faith and learning.

Congratulations to the Class of 2025!
