Congratulations Catholic Central High School Graduates

A Radiant Milestone: Celebrating the CCHS Class of 2026

The Holy Spirit Catholic School Division was alive with excitement this past weekend as we celebrated the incredible Class of 2026 from Catholic Central High School (CCHS). It was a weekend defined by more than just diplomas; it was a beautiful tapestry of faith, deep reflection, and genuine, heartfelt joy.

Inspired by the theme “Climb a Mountain and Turn Around,” graduates, families, and staff gathered to honor the resilience and spirit of a class that has truly left its mark on our community.

The celebrations began on a high note Friday evening with a moving graduation Mass presided over by Father Kevin Tumback. That sense of gratitude carried over into Saturday morning, where the atmosphere was electric. There is nothing quite like the collective cheer of a community watching its youth proudly cross the stage to begin their next chapter.

Throughout the ceremonies, the messages shared were filled with warmth and wisdom. Trustees, teachers, and Superintendent Chantel Axani each spoke to the strength found in faith and the importance of carrying a supportive community in one’s heart long after leaving the halls of CCHS.

Valedictorian Alex Galtonov delivered a standout address, using the lyrics of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” to reflect on the growth that happens during life’s most uncertain moments. She will be stepping into the role as Mr. Mark Wynder has chosen to transition back into the classroom full-time.

Mrs. Zoratti’s connection to St. Michael’s runs deep. She graduated from the school 36 years ago before attending the University of Alberta for two years and transferring to the University of Calgary, where she earned a Bachelor of Kinesiology. In 2008, she returned to university to earn her Bachelor of Education with a science major from the University of Lethbridge.

Both Mrs. Zoratti and her husband are proud St. Michael’s alumni whose children were all "Dragons." Born and raised in Pincher Creek, the couple now ranch west of town and are incredibly proud to call the community their home.

Since beginning her teaching career at St. Michael’s in 2011, Mrs. Zoratti has taught every grade from Kindergarten through Grade 8, with the exception of Grade 1. Throughout her career, she has taken a leadership role in implementing the school's SPACES reporting platform and Collaborative Response model. She consistently seeks out opportunities to grow her professional practice to better help students deepen their understanding.

In welcoming Mrs. Zoratti to this position, Superintendent Chantel Axani shares:

"We are thrilled to appoint Patty as Associate Principal of St. Michael’s School. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." — Philippians 2: 3-4

Reflecting on this verse, she shares:

“Philippians 2:3-4 serves as the cornerstone of my philosophy as an educator and leader. Throughout my life, whether through coaching, volunteering, or taking on leadership roles, I have believed that true progress is a collective effort. To me, this scripture is a call to servant leadership—a reminder that my role as Associate Principal is not to seek personal recognition, but to elevate our entire community. I am committed to leading by example and, in the spirit of humility, drawing upon the diverse expertise and wisdom of our staff and families. By looking to the interests of others first, we ensure that every decision we make is centered on the growth and well-being of their students.”

Principal Karen Schmidt also shares her enthusiasm for Mrs. Zoratti’s appointment:
"With over a decade of dedicated service to St. Michael’s School, Patty is a proven educator whose passion for children is rooted in her deep commitment to our Catholic faith. Patty is a vibrant member of our school community who leads with a servant’s heart. Her contagious, joyful energy is a gift that elevates everyone around her, and I am certain her leadership will empower our students to live out our motto: 'Rise Above! St. Kateri

Saints Who Inspire Us: The Life and Legacy of St. Kateri Tekakwitha

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, known affectionately as the "Lily of the Mohawks," remains one of the most resilient and radiant figures in the history of faith. Born in 1656 in what is now Auriesville, New York, to a Mohawk father and an Algonquin Christian mother, Kateri’s life was defined by a quiet strength that blossomed despite immense hardship. Her journey began in the shadow of tragedy when, at just four years old, a smallpox outbreak claimed the lives of her parents and brother. Kateri survived the disease, but it left her with permanent facial scarring and damaged eyesight—challenges that would lead her to be named "Tekakwitha," meaning "she who bumps into things."

Raised by her uncle, Kateri was a young woman of profound independence. Despite the social expectations of her village and pressure to marry, she found herself drawn to the teachings of Jesuit missionaries. At the age of twenty, she made the courageous choice to be baptized, a decision that was met with significant opposition from many in her community. Facing ridicule and isolation for her new faith, Kateri eventually sought refuge in a Christian community near Montreal. There, she lived a life of deep prayer, service, and a profound respect for nature, often creating small wooden crosses in the woods to transform the forest into a place of worship.

Today, St. Kateri is honored as the patron saint of Indigenous peoples, the environment, and ecology, with her feast day celebrated on July 14 in the United States and April 17 in Canada. Her life matters because she reminds us to stay strong in our faith, even when it is difficult. She showed great courage, devotion, and a deep-seated respect for creation, encouraging us to care for the earth and trust God in every part of our lives. Her spirit is perhaps best captured in her own searching question: “Who can teach me what is most pleasing to God that I may do it?”

As we reflect on her legacy, we might ask ourselves: How can we show courage in our faith and care for the world God created? Following her example allows us to find beauty in our own scars and a sanctuary in the world around us.

A Prayer to St. Kateri

Lord, help us follow the example of St. Kateri by loving You with our whole hearts and caring for Your creation. Give us courage to live our faith and kindness toward all people.

Amen.

St. Kateri, pray for us!

Learn, Build and Go: Knowing Through the Body

Learn, Build and Go: Knowing Through the Body
March 31, 2026

Learn, Build & Go is a division-wide professional learning series rooted in relationship, reflection, and responsibility—the calls to Truth and Reconciliation. Facilitated by Jana Boshee, Division Principal for First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) Education the series invites educators to explore how Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing can shape classroom practice. The “Go” reminds participants that this learning moves beyond the session itself and into action within classrooms, schools, and communities. In Blackfoot, kii nai'tsistomato'k ai'stamma'tso'tsspi describes discernment as “making knowledge part of the body,” reinforcing the idea that knowing is lived, walked, and embodied. Aligning with the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division faith plan, this year’s focus centers on knowing God, ourselves, and creation through story.

The March 31 session, Knowing Through the Body: Enskillment and Practice, highlighted how knowledge is not only held in the mind but also practiced through doing. Teachers participated in experiential activities such as sewing, beading, and leatherwork, modeling how Blackfoot teachings are grounded in everyday life. Prior to the session, Jana shared reflection questions with administrators, encouraging participants to consider: What are the materials and tools teaching you? What are you noticing about the materials and others around you? What thoughts does this bring up around teaching and learning?

As educators engaged in hands-on learning, several key themes emerged. Many participants emphasized the value of experiential learning, noting that “learn by engaging” and “experiential learning” allowed them to connect more deeply with the process. Daphne Sander, Coordinator of English as an Additional Language shared, “It feels good to make something that feels meaningful,” capturing the sense of accomplishment and purpose that came from creating something by hand. Others spoke about gaining a “new appreciation for all my clothing,” recognizing the time, skill, and patience required for handmade work.

Relationship building was another strong theme.

Participants expressed excitement about connecting with colleagues they may not normally work alongside. The shared experience created opportunities for conversation, collaboration, and “new connections” and friendships across the division

Slowing down also emerged as a meaningful takeaway. Mary Tilleman, Principal at St. Patrick School reflected that “slowing down, taking the time to enjoy learning something new feels great.” Many described the experience as relaxing and

therapeutic, noting that working with their hands created space for reflection and meaningful dialogue. Participants shared that the environment helped them relate to one another while enjoying the calm pace of learning a new skill.

Emily Fox, Catholic Central High School First Nations Facilitator and ribbon skirt organizer, highlighted the unity

that develops when people create together. Emily also spoke about the importance of carrying on ancestral traditions, noting that many of the patterns used today continue knowledge passed down through generations. “It’s amazing the things they did so long ago are still being passed on,” she shared. She also reflected on the spiritual dimension of her work, explaining, “We pray as we sew—I call on my grandmother to help me. It always works.” Emily expressed gratitude for being able to teach her passion and share cultural traditions through hands-on learning.

The Learn, Build & Go series continues throughout the year, building on themes of story, reflection, and action. Upcoming sessions will focus on carrying stories forward, creating spaces of belonging and hope, and exploring story as gift and seed.
