This past weekend, St. Mary School in Taber proudly celebrated the achievements of its 2025 graduating class, honouring a group of 26 students who have grown up, learned, and journeyed together—many since kindergarten.
The celebrations began on Friday, June 13 with a Graduation Mass, led by Deacon Brian Kinahan, where students, families, and staff gathered in faith and gratitude for the journey so far. Later that evening, the graduates donned their caps and gowns for the formal Convocation Ceremony, marking a significant milestone in their academic and personal lives.
The convocation featured a touching graduate procession, the presentation of diplomas, and inspiring greetings from several dignitaries, including Mayor of Taber Mr. Andrew Prokop, MLA for Taber-Warner Mr. Grant Hunter, Member of Parliament Mr. David Bexte, and Holy Spirit Catholic School Division Superintendent Ms. Chantel Axani.
Valedictorian Kennedy Planger addressed her fellow classmates with heartfelt honesty and encouragement.
“To be named Valedictorian is very special and means a lot,” she shared. “For me, that means I wasn’t always the smartest in my class, but I tried the most—and I think that’s the most important thing in life: to just try and do your best.”
Kennedy also expressed excitement about the future.
“I will be moving to the University of Calgary in the fall to study Psychology. It will be exciting to get out of a small town and find new things that I enjoy.”
Principal Mrs. Michelle Nevil, delivering her address in her first year leading St. Mary’s School, had a unique connection to the class.
“This is a special day because this class was one of my last kindergarten classes I taught at St. Patrick School,” she said. “Seeing them now as these beautiful young people who have so much potential—it’s amazing. I just want them to know that anything is possible and that each and every one of them can do or be whatever they want.”
She also reflected on the strong bond between the students.
“The fact that these students have been together for so many years has really helped to define them as people. It’s a rare and special experience that has fostered loyalty, connection, and shared growth.”
Associate Principal Mr. Josh Van Uden, both an educator and a parent to one of the graduates, echoed those sentiments.
“It’s just so exciting for all these students, and the hard work they’ve put in to make it to graduation. Most of them have been together since kindergarten, and that makes this day truly meaningful,” he said. “To watch your son be part of that and grow into a young man—being part of that as both a father and an administrator is very special.”
His advice for graduates was simple yet heartfelt.
“Go out, have fun, be smart, live your life, take some chances, be respectful—and you’ll do great.”
The celebrations continued on Saturday, June 14 with the Graduation Banquet, where students, staff, and families gathered to reflect on memories and toast the journey ahead. The evening featured a formal dinner, a Toast to the Staff, Toast to Parents and Guardians, a Class History Presentation, the Grad Video, and a Grand March to close the celebration on a joyful note.
The Class of 2025 leaves behind a legacy of friendship, perseverance, and promise. As they take their next steps, the entire St. Mary School community celebrates their achievements and prays for continued success in the bright futures ahead.
